Contraindications  
IPL Rejuvenation & Reduction Treatments

For the majority of people, intense pulsed light (including electromagnetic radio frequency) based treatment has long been accepted as a safe and effective treatment. However, like all treatments, certain contraindications need to be considered for your own safety.

Please talk to your aesthetician about your conditions before booking. If you are taking any medication or have an existing medical condition or concern not listed, please consult with your doctor first.

ABSOLUTE CONTRAINDICATIONS

  • Epilepsy [DANGER: May cause seizure]
  • Pregnant
  • Breastfeeding
  • HIV/AIDS
  • Cancer (all forms)
  • Undergoing chemotherapy or immune therapy
  • Immunodeficiency
  • Lupus
  • High blood pressure (uncontrolled)
  • Diabetes (uncontrolled)
  • Keloid scarring
  • Active Herpes/cold sores (on treatment area)
  • Psoriasis or eczema (on treatment area)
  • Photosensitive medications
  • Retin A medications (wait 6 months after completion)
  • Roaccutane oral medications (wait 6 months after completion)
  • Sunburn
  • Chemical peels and laser resurfacing
  • Excessive pigmentation
  • Tattoos
  • Very dark skin (Fitzpatrick skin type 6)
  • Varicose veins
  • Vein inflammation
  • Liver or kidney disease
  • Haemophilia
  • Severe reactions to histamines

If you have any ABSOLUTE CONTRAINDICATIONS you cannot be treated.

PARTIAL CONTRAINDICATIONS

  • Recent surgery (wait 6 months)
  • Recent scars (wait 6 months)
  • Infection (avoid area)
  • Antibiotics (wait until course completed)
  • Open lesions (avoid area)
  • Depilatory creams (wait 2 weeks)
  • Areas being treated with Botox® (wait 3 months) or dermal fillers (wait 2 weeks)
  • Areas being treated with Radio Frequency or Laser (wait 2 weeks)
  • Suntan (sun must be avoided the entire duration of the treatment regime)
  • Hirsutism
  • Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) 
  • Prednisone and other steroid medications (treatment will increase inflammation)
  • Moles (if you have a mole, you can still undergo IPL based treatment as the beams used aren’t on the UV spectrum, however it is always important to keep an eye on any visual mole alterations that may occur (if you do see anything suspicious, make sure you inform your doctor of the treatment and have it checked as soon as possible)

If you have any PARTIAL CONTRAINDICATIONS you may or may not be suitable for treatment. Your aesthetician will advise the best course of action in a consultation.
